Forty-seven percent named the economy and jobs, 9 percent abortion, and separately, climate change and immigration, 8 percent crime. Gary Langer, ABC’s ace survey analyst, points out that in the NEP “women were 11 points more apt than men to cite abortion as their top issue, but women did not turn out, nor vote Democratic, in larger than usual numbers.” He also notes that 44 percent of 18-29 year olds selected abortion as their top issue, twice as many as those that picked inflation.ĪP VoteCast asked a different question about the most important issue facing the country. Abortion voters supported Democrats by a larger margin than inflation voters supported Republicans. Crime and separately gun policy followed at 11 percent. Inflation was the top issue (31 percent) followed closely by abortion (27 percent). The NEP asked voters which of five issues mattered most to voters. Those who were enthusiastic voted 95 percent for Republican House candidates, those who were angry voted 85 percent for Democrats In another NEP question, 16 percent said they were enthusiastic about the Dobbs decision, 39 percent were angry. In AP VoteCast, 63 percent said it should be legal in all or most cases 36 percent illegal in most or all cases. Here’s what they found.Ībortion: The NEP used a four-part question and found that 29 percent said abortion should be legal in all cases, 30 percent legal in most, 26 percent illegal in most, and 10 percent illegal in all cases. The partnership does not do a traditional, in-person exit poll but a state-by-state survey of registered voters drawn from state files and an opt-in online survey. AP VoteCast, which debuted in 2018, is a partnership of NORC, AP, and Fox News. In addition, the consortium uses telephone, e-mail, and text surveys to reach by mail and early voters. The National Election Pool (NEP) and Edison Research conduct an exit poll of early voters and voter leaving the polls on Election Day. The results below are from initial reports, and they could change slightly. Two substantial undertakings by the pollsters give us insight into who voted, how they voted, and why voters cast their votes the way they did.
